Launched in June 2024, AirFair is a targeted social initiative aiming to spread awareness about the crucial need for clean air in India while also supporting marginalized communities with the resources they need for better quality of life. These communities are often left behind and are not taken into consideration during policy and program planning. AirFair, thus, puts their needs at the forefront, aiming to help them negate the impacts of air pollution on their health, livelihood, and daily lives.
AirFair uses a multi-faceted approach to address this challenge. A key goal of the project is to discuss the reality of air pollution in countries like India, where development must inevitably contend with citizen welfare, through an informative podcast series exploring causes, effects, and potential solutions. The project also seeks to have an on-ground positive impact in the quality of life of vulnerable communities through the donation of affordable air purifiers to local NGOs. Furthermore, AirFair seeks to raise awareness of innovative methods of air pollution mitigation that are low-cost and easy to implement, and identify the gaps that exist in this space, with recommendations on how to close them. Project AirFair is determined to develop a comprehensive intervention that benefits the people of Delhi and saves them from the risks that air pollution poses.
The social initiative’s focus is not only on conceptualizing immediate measures that will mitigate air pollution but also to understand the intersections between public health and environmental sustainability in lived experiences of the global South. The mission statement is simple: that each citizen of India has the right to breathe clean air. To this end, by synthesizing educational and resource donation endeavors, AirFair is making its mark in conserving the environment.
